John McCamish holds a finished cannon charge. Charges either have just gunpowder, which are a little larger in diameter than a ping pong ball, and shaped like a cherry bomb, or the charges are filled with both gunpowder and flour or orange carpenter's chalk which are both about the size of a banana. The flour and chalk both add a bit of extra noise and oomph to the charge, and the chalk also provides some coloring to the lingering smoke that is produced. - Dan Celvi
