The personal enemy of Jose Rizal was the Dominican Manila Archbishop, Bernardino Nozaleda, OP, who was parodied in the Noli by the character of Padre Hernando Sybila, and sort of name-played also by Padre Bernardo Salvi, the covetous brother Franciscano of Padre Damaso Verdolagas, the true Castilian Father of Maria Clara de los Santos, the kasintahan of Juan Crisostomo Ibarra (shortened from Ibarramendia, the family whose patriarch persecuted the ancestors of Elias). The story of the slain sacristan (Crispin), wrongly accused of theft in the convento, was based on a true story.
